Competitive rowing is one of the oldest and most traditional of sports. Races between oared galleys were held in ancient Egypt and Rome. Competitive rowing is one of the most physically demanding of all sports. Most races are 2000 meters, involving five to seven minutes of rowing, and thus require both aerobic and anaerobic conditioning.

Competitive rowing is a very controlled movement where techniques plays a major role, and where the finer differences between movements determine races. Rowers are instructed on how to improve their technique to make their boat move faster, and are also given workouts to do outside of practice times inside the shell.
